June 17 History Channel "Hero Ships" Film Debut Kicks Off "S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien" 65th Anniversary"

64 years ago, a hero fought at Normandy – the S.S. Jeremiah O’Brien. On June 17, she literally gets to toot her own horn by playing host to the premiere of the new History International Channel documentary, “Hero Ships: SS Jeremiah O’Brien.” The event, starting with a 5:30pm reception hosted by Brandy Ho’s Restaurant, will include tours of the WWII ship including her vintage engine room (featured in the film Titanic) and culminate with a screening of the film.

Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door, and may be ordered by phoning (415) 544-0100 or online at www.ssjeremiahobrien.org. Seating is limited.

The screening will take place onboard the O’Brien, home to the National Liberty Ship Memorial at San Francisco’s Pier 45 in Fisherman’s Wharf. The ship will be moored at dockside for this event.

“Hero Ships” is a stirring and historic 13-part series about the most prestigious vessels in US Naval history. Presented in high-definition, with gripping interviews from the veterans who served on their decks, each Hero Ships episode shows the evolution of one ship and retraces the most dramatic moments from her history. After WWII, the ships were forgotten by their country and were destined for sale or destruction before veterans’ groups stepped in to save them.

Now, such hero ships as the O’Brien are moored in some of the nation’s biggest cities as floating museums and gateways to a time when gray-skinned battlewagons prowled our imaginations. During World War II, 2,751 Liberty Ships, constructed at 18 US ship yards, were meant to be built quicker than German U-Boats could sink them. “Built by the mile and chopped off by the yard,” as President Roosevelt said, they were to form a “bridge of ships” across the Atlantic. Winston Churchill wrote, “Without the supply column of Liberty Ships that endlessly plowed the seas between America and England, the war would have been lost.”

Of the 13 naval vessels featured in the Hero Ships series, the O’Brien is the world’s oldest, fully functional and most historically accurate World War II vessel still in Coast Guard-approved operation.

Tuesday, June 17, 5:30 reception followed by screening at 7:30
Pier 45
Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door, and may be ordered by phoning (415) 544-0100 or online at www.ssjeremiahobrien.org.

Auditions- Aberrant Behavior- Saturday June 7th @ Mamma Buzz in Oakland arts district

I am having auditions for my new movie "Aberrant Behavior" Saturday June Seventh at Mamma Buzz Cafe in downtown Oaklands Art District 2318 Telegraph Ave from 4-6PM. If your interested in the movie you can e-mail me at: aberrantbehaviormovie@gmail.com. I have already casted some of the roles and have people working on it, I just have not cast all of them yet and of course the female lead.

There will be some paid roles (of course the leads) but this is a low budget (around 25-35,000 or so) affair so it won't be a whole lot. Just to warn you.

Aberrant Behavior, is basically a love story about two self destructive anarchistic-y street kids who have an exaggerated form of pica, a disorder where people feel compelled to eat non-food materials, carpet, dirt, soap, drano, various chemicals, etc. as portrayed as a drug addiction. They have a very co-dependent relationship and with there disorders too , they literally destroy each other.

There's more to it, but that's the basic synopsis. If you can't make it to the auditions, you can send me a head shot with resume, or whatever you want. We can then decide when and where to meet.

THERE WILL BE SOME SEXUALITY AND NUDITY FOR THE TWO LEADS, AS WELL AS MISTY AND FOGGY TO A LESSER DEGREE. PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT ME FOR THOSE ROLES, IF YOUR NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THAT. THANK YOU.

I will be hiring for many roles, all ages (over 18) races, sizes, etc. But here are the main characters:
Main Characters:

LEADS:
Victor Muertos: (Mid to late twenties) Half Mexican/Half white (Half latino/half white will probably work). Black hair, down to chin and five o clock shadow. (Flexible though). Tall and thin but not too thin. Dark, brooding, depressed, prone to long winded sarcastic, cynical rants. Living off the state for mental depression, and addiction, but eventually breaks himself from the state. He hates the state, and normal life in general. He hates almost everything. He is sort of sloppy hipster, slightly emo, slight slight slight goth meets street kid. Light or no body mod, piercings, etc. He eventually lives on the street because of choice. He falls in love with Aiko. SOME NUDITY AND SEXUALS SITUATIONS REQUIRED-CAST

Aiko Zumbi (18-early twenties or look like it) Half Japanese/Half German (or Japanese, or half Japanese/Half white). Shorter than Victor, thin but still slightly curvy.
Street kid with a bit of dark hippie. Has been sexually abused as a child. Prone to violence. Prone to long winded rants, or sometimes just total silence. Dark, cynical, with a very bleak view of life. Body mods, tattoo's, piercings, fine. Dreaded or colored hair fine as well. Actually preffered. She falls in love with Victor. SOME NUDITY AND SEXUAL SITUATIONS REQUIRED.

SUPPORTING LEADS:
Pedida Muertos- (20's -40's)-Mexican- Victor's nearly catatonic - mute drug addict mother, who is usually messing around with strange men, and drugged up. Mostly abuses Victor through neglect. Mostly shown in flashbacks, but one scene in present as well. Young actress aged to look older in present, or vice versa.

Misty & Foggy (20's) two girls that Victor and Chad meet at the bar, who are wasted, and act and look like twins. Very ditzy, drunk, corporate, normal. They take Victor and Chad back to there place. Drunken debauchery ensues.

Spic 'N' Span (20's -40's)- One of the horrible mascots for the advertising firm Victor works for, "Spic n Span's Whiten it up" Cleaning product. They play racist cliched versions of mexican house workers. Think Samo. It's meant to be horrible, and it of course offends Victor.

Aiko's Father-
A militant cold hearted man who sexually abuses aiko. Must be bilingual Japanese & English

Aiko's Mother-
Always screaming at Aikos father. Bi-lingual fluent in German & English

VARIOUS:
Hipster's (18-30) Some with speaking roles. A house party Victor crashes.

Office workers (20's -on) Some with speaking roles.

Various small roles for the horrible commercials and promo's from the firm Victor briefly works for

Other roles as well-Not listed

New Independent Film Website

For the last year I've been working on a website for Independent Filmmakers and people who love Independent Film. Its called Reel Connect (www.reelconnect.com) and over the last few months its grown to have quite a few good independent films. If you have an independent film you've made, feel free to upload it to the site (for free) or just go and watch independent films. The site really focuses on the people behind independent films (everyone who works on the film can be listed as part of the cast and crew, and everyone has a profile) I'd love to hear what you guys think of the site, how it can be improved or any other comments or suggestions you might have. Thanks.

now accepting short film & video submissions for Art & Music festival

RDiMT in association with Lightning in a Bottle Art & Music Festival are now accepting original short-form film & video submissions to showcase at our late night projection area this year.

We are putting a call out for engaging, funny, surreal, thought-provoking, avant-garde, ridiculous, sublime material but most importantly works generated by *you*. Entries should be no longer than 5 minutes, but anything that captures the imagination will be considered for screening, so don't put away that brilliant 11 minute documentary you made on the man-eating chipmunks of the African Sierra. We want to see it all.

please see the official announcement here:

http://tribes.tribe.net/renegadedriveinmovietheater/thread/d2a72bfe-b2af-488f-9419-d187eeb636fd

************

for the uninitiated:

Lightning in a Bottle is an interactive art & music festival, currently in its 3rd year at its current location in Santa Barbara, CA. Conceived by The Do Lab, an LA- based event production company that has created interactive environments within larger art & music festivals such as Coachella, Summer Sonic (Japan), & Electric Picnic (Ireland), LIB is an eclectic blend of music, art, performance, workshops and green energy that will take place over 4 days this year at the Live Oaks Campgrounds on May 23 - 26th. Powered almost entirely through solar energy & biodiesel, their mission is to create an event where participants can have amazing and fulfilling experiences whilst remaining fully conscious of the natural environment and minimizing their effect upon it.

Renegade Drive-In Movie Theatre (RDiMT) is a collective of outdoor-cinemaphiles that hold spontaneous movie screenings in random & covert locations, projecting a chosen film onto raw surfaces in unconventional locations found within the varied urban landscape of Los Angeles. Date & rendezvous point are usually announced 24-72 hours in advance and participants are encouraged to maintain a low profile when arriving at clandestine locations. Chosen films have been projected onto sides of trains, highway underpasses, deserted downtown alleys, abandoned buildings, etc. No (dark) surface goes unconsidered. Due to the barren nature of some of our chosen locations, the audiences must often bring their own seating, and of course whatever refreshments they wish to imbibe or share with others. We have yet to encounter any trouble from John Law, but the possibility is always there and well, adds to the whole experience.

I am a Certified Sexological Bodyworker, Erotic Empowerment Coach, Tantric Educator, and Performance Artist. I am seeking to make some short videos about using breath, sound, and movement to access one's erotic energy, raise that energy and circulate it throughout the entire body.

This should be relatively easy to do. Assuming that it goes well I have larger projects in mind to follow.

If you are interested in collaborating with me to make this happen, please contact me with links to some of examples of your work.

Thank you.

Hey folks!

I'm starting yet a "nuther" [sic] FILM FACTORY! Its here in SF. We have a meet and greet on Sat, FEB 9th from 11A - ?. If you are right for it, we'll tell you a secret when you get here before 3PM. Maybe you already know? Anyhow, if not, there will still be some intermingling with other professionals (models, actors, filmmakers, composers, photogs, grips, etc...). We're starting a database that will try to get you some work or whatever you are looking for. The meet and greet is at 638 Kearny ST, SF 94108 and we also have a 10k sq ft warehouse that has a huuuuuuge green screen in SOMA that is getting prepped. So, if you need something, come and say hello and we'll keep it reel! Remember, we want you for your look, but we want you for your mind too!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FEBRUARY 29-MARCH 6th in CHICAGO at FACETS CINEMATHEQUE
PHANTOM LOVE

A memorably surreal psychodrama, Nina Menkes' (The Bloody Child, Magdalena Viraga) Phantom Love is a striking evocation of female dreamscape in which violence and trauma are steadily percolating, just beneath the surface. The lead character is Lulu Marina Shoif: a very beautiful, but angry and isolated woman, who lives alone, and works in a casino in Koreatown, Los Angeles. Lulu's relationship with her much younger lover is charged but emotionally disconnected and Lulu's younger sister, Nitzan (Juliette Marquis, This Girl's Life), is in the midst of a psychotic breakdown, caused in part by prescription medication. Lulu feels emotionally invaded by her mother, who wants to come to town and stay with her in order to try and help the younger sister-but this feels like a further intense invasion, and Lulu refuses. Phantom Love positions an alienated woman against a harsh, inhospitable landscape-this time, within a family. Structured like Chinese boxes, with each scene opening onto another, Phantom Love is a powerful erotic-fantasy that explores a woman's sexuality through her dreams.
MORE "PHANTOM LOVE news below:

KNR Productions and Menkesfilm are happy to announce that our film, PHANTOM LOVE(2007) will be featured in the 30th Annual Creteil Women’s Film Festival in Paris, France, March 14-23, 2008; at the Women’s Int’l Fim Festival in Koln, Germany April 20-8, 2008 (where Menkes is also a Jury Member), as well as at the Prague International Film Festival March 27-April 4th, 2008, along with a RETROSPECTIVE of Nina Menkes’s films. Another retrospective is being planned at the ARSENAL Cinema in BERLIN, Germany, for later this year, as well as at the Tekfestival in Rome, Italy, May 6-11, 2008.

PHANTOM LOVE was recently featured on numerous “Top Films of 2007” lists, including Variety’s Robert Koehler, and John Gianvito in SENSES OF CINEMA. “SENSES OF CINEMA” February 2008 issue will also be publishing a lengthy interview with Menkes by David James, and a radical essay on Menkes’s work by Berenice Reynaud, entitled : NINA MENKES: The Warrior and her Jiang Hu, which discusses Menkes’s films in connection with her work on women in Chinese martial arts movies.

PHANTOM LOVE was also recently awarded "BEST ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENT" at the Bangkok World Film Festival in Thailand. The Jury, which included German filmmaker and Bela Tarr’s DP, Fred Kelemen, Thai helmer Ithisunthorn Wichailuck and Thai critic Niwat Kongpian stated that the award was given for the film’s “outstanding black and white cinematography, compelling narrative structure and extraordinary use of sounds to create a surreal atmosphere offering access to deeper levels of reality.”

In addition, Special Programs featuring PHANTOM LOVE in conjunction with RETROSPECTIVES of Nina Menkes’s work ( A SOFT WARRIOR ‘81/THE GREAT SADNESS OF ZOHARA ‘84/MAGDALENA VIRAGA ‘86/QUEEN OF DIAMONDS ‘91/BLOODY CHILD ‘96/MASSAKER’ 05) were shown to great critical and public response at the ATHENS INT’L FILM FESTIVAL and First Art Biennial in Greece in September 2007, as well as at the VIENNALE INT’L FILM FESTIVAL in Austria, October 2007, where Menkes was hailed as “One of greatest figures of feminist New Wave cinema”.

PHANTOM LOVE premiered at Sundance 2007 to critical acclaim—please see some of the great reviews below-- and has gone on to show widely at multiple major international film fests, including LOCARNO, EDINBURGH, STOCKHOLM, WARSAW, THE VIENNALE, as well as special screenings at THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART in NYC, and the REDCAT Theater as part of the MOCA’s WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution show in Los Angeles.

PHANTOM LOVE was produced by Kevin Ragsdale, directed by Nina Menkes, and stars Marina Shoif and Juliette Marquis. DP is Chris Soos.

“Stanley Kubrick's confident statement “If it can be written or thought, it can be filmed” receives stunning confirmation in PHANTOM LOVE… Not since Bela Tarr's Werckmeister Harmonies has black-and-white looked so stunning and mesmerizing…RADICAL AND BEAUTIFUL, PURE CINEMA ONE OF THE YEAR’s BEST FILMS!”

- Robert Koehler, VARIETY

"POTENT AND LUMINOUS! A seductively powerful vision...Menkes is one of the most provocative artists in film today!"

- Kevin Thomas, LOS ANGELES TIMES

“PHANTOM LOVE, the most recent 35mm feature by Nina Menkes, one of Los Angeles's leading independent film artists, makes its New York premiere at MoMA… Her richly nuanced films are distinguished by luminous, surreal, and often disturbing imagery, and accompanied by soundtracks that are carefully modulated to suggest the simultaneity of the psychological and outside worlds.”

- Laurence Kardish, Senior Curator

Museum of Modern Art, NYC; Department of Film

“The title recalls a line from Resnais' classic, Last Year in Marienbad. The woman 'A' says, "You're like some phantom waiting for me to come." In Resnais' work, whether the protagonists find fulfilment is a decision of interpretation by the viewer, or perhaps the male protagonist. For Menkes' Lulu, it depends on herself. ….Evocative, challenging and very rewarding, PHANTOM LOVE gripped me with such intensity I probably would have jumped if a pin had fallen. Among the welter of films I am watching in the course of the Edinburgh International Film Festival, it is the images from PHANTOM LOVE that continually haunt me. PHANTOM LOVE is the sort of work that keeps cinema alive.”

- Chris Docker, Eye for Film, Scotland

“One of the undoubted highlights of this year’s fest is US filmmaker Nina Menkes’ black and white internationally roaming surreal familial drama Phantom Love…Menkes looks set to be David Lynch’s natural cinematic successor. It would be a shame to miss her coronation.”

-Paul Dale, The List, UK

"With PHANTOM LOVE, Nina Menkes adds another masterwork to her extraordinary oeuvre. Its story of a woman's trauma and healing is told with a virtuosic use of fundamental film techniques: black and white 35mm photography, exquisite framing, and resonant sound design. It is a triumph of visual intelligence and aesthetic integrity. "

Birth.

About two decades of so called education which is today more a rat-race for learning tools to earn money rather than gain any true knowledge. Entering the rat race for about 40-50 years to earn money, at times selling your soul and then the obvious and unavoidable…..death !

In this non-stop, assembly line like transition from one end of the continuum to the other, relationships like parents, siblings, spouses and children and emotions like love, friendship and hatred, and, events like success and failure happen to us.

Whether or not we understand these dearest of relationships, the people we come across and claims to love, emotions, passions and events we encounter or the raison d'être of life itself is no more a concern in the rat-race for more, whether it be for money or material goods.

That joie de vivre is today nothing more than trinkets in malls and that we spend our lives running after something we will lose in less than a century along with the most precious of our gifts, LIFE itself,…is strangely enough not a concern for the PRAGMATIC and WORLDLY.

Where from we come, where to we go and why…the most logical questions a CEO of the biggest Fortune 500 may ask are not asked about the biggest projects of all…LIFE.

The reason for the brief event called LIFE…the reason for its joys and sorrows..the reason why we can never find what we are always REALLY after…that most elusive of all treasures…HAPPINESS…these are some questions we think of all our lives and never have time or opportunity to ask or ponder about...

This blog is an honest and creative endeavour to understand life and spread smiles on the faces of all those we rub our shoulders against by bringing along like minded people. This blog wishes to raise these questions on a platform which will bring on one stage …both believers and agnostics…men of God and men of the world…and a rare few who have bridged the divide to understand how LIFE ought to be truly LIVED.

The long term goal is to develop film scripts, TV serials and media entities which will espouse such ideas in an era of inane and mundane media.
This is a humble beginning in the internet era which has shown the power of ONE.

In the forthcoming blogs I will be discussing ideas for film scripts and TV serials, which I intend to grow into a movement with the sheer power of internet's bandwagon effect. In the future I also intend to include ads on this blog in order to start monetizing for the future endeavours.

So hop in and contribute if you too think out of the box and want a change for the better.

Aberrant behavior-auditions saturday the 19th 2263 mission (between 18th & 19th) 3:30-6:30 (Also looking for crew)

I'm making a film, that will be somewhat explicit in parts. Also, there will be imagery that needs nudity.
I am afraid that I will not be able to cut the content of the movie script, even if I find actors interested .You can e-mail me with rates, photos, questions, etc. If your an actor or actress who has worked in nudity and/or sexual situations, is comfortable with it, and would like to take on a feature narrative film as a major role please e-mail me or show up to the auditions. The two main roles are the ones that require it but there are others. If you would like to be featured in sequences that do not involve the main characters, but are part of dreamlike imagery you can either show up to the audition, or e-mail me with link to your work. Best place to e-mail:
theperiodmovie@yahoo.com

Here is the plot:
Aberrant Behavior, is basically about two self destructive anarchistic-y street kids who have an exaggerated form of pica, a disorder where people feel compelled to eat non-food materials, carpet, dirt, soap, drano, various chemicals, etc. as portrayed as a drug addiction. Who are in a very self destructive relationship, there perfect for each-other except they literally kill each-other by being together. A lot of psycho-sexual/self mutilation-masochism in this one. There's more to it, but that's the basic synopsis. If your interested in acting check out the posting under the talent section.

Keep in mind the budget of this movie will probably stay around 25-35, 000 dollars , so just warning I can pay but not the highest rates

Thanks-
Here is the original posting:

I have a new movie called "Aberrant Behavior" auditioning Sat. 1/19 3:30-6:3- at the Dark Room SF 2263 Mission off of 19th and Mission@ 3:30 - 6:30. (My first movie "the period" came out through Sub Rosa Cinema can be seen/bought at Netflix www.myspace.com/theperiodmovie, as well as various other outlets)
Aberrant Behavior, is basically about two self destructive anarchistic-y street kids who have an exaggerated form of pica, a disorder where people feel compelled to eat non-food materials, carpet, dirt, soap, drano, various chemicals, etc. as portrayed as a drug addiction. There's more to it, but that's the basic synopsis. If you can't make it to the auditions, you can send me a head shot with resume, or whatever you want. We can then decide when and where to meet.

I will be hiring for many roles, all ages (over 18) races, sizes, etc. But here are the main characters:
Main Characters:

Emma May (20's to 30's) Actress must be thin, because character is anorexic. Very fake, superficial, manic laughing. Very self deluded. She doesn't really see her anorexia as a problem, she think she looks great though she's obviously dieing and goes to extremes to keep herself thin. She is always dressed up elegantly and thinks of herself as a proper lady even when doing something grotesque . She is a head executive at a advertising/pr firm that she gets a Victor a brief job at, through meeting him in a class over there mutual addictions. (Brief Nudity /Partial a few times)

Caseworker Joe (30's-40's) Written has hispanic, but open. Larger guy, tall, built like a shed, a bit fat but not flabby fat. Very coarse, to the point, direct "Take no shit" kind of guy. Very normal, buys into the whole big house in the suburbs, good job, etc. He is Victor's Caseworker, and is tired of Victor's Shit, and believes he is not trying to quit. (None)

Glitters- a gay gangster rapper, take everything that's a cliche and horrible about it and flip it so that it's gay (some, will also need male models)

Pedida Muertos-Victors Mother. A nearly catatonic morally apprehensive drug addict who's always sleeping with random guys and ignoring her child (Some nudity/sexual situations can be negotiated to less)

And then random visuals, nudes for some flashback scenes (of some sort of psuedo porn the main characer shot) a girl that Victor sleeps with before he falls in love with Zumbi (requires brief nudity/sexuality) and some body part imagery that will not feature the face of the actor/actress, among other thing

I need before I even start:
Prostethetics/Makeup- There are many parts of my movie that need gore, ghoulish makeup or creating body casts for dreamlike effect (like a scene where they fall onto the ground and break like porcelain blood-paint spraying out of them creating a heart) but most importantly I need someone who can help make someone look anorexic, eye sockets reccessed , hips sticking out, ribs sticking out, shoulder blades, etc. I can't start without this because it's one of the main characters.

Boom-I have someone lined up for operating boom/mixing sound, but I'm not sure he'll always be available. I need someone who has at least some experience in this to help. I have equipment but having (better?) equipment would be great.

Props- It would be great to have someone who can assist in creating edible (or non toxic) chemicals, substances, materials for the main characters to ingest. It would also free me up to think about other things.

Lighting/ Art Department/ Set Design/Decoration/Locations- I need someone who can do a lot without a lot who can work with unusual materials. Who isn't too expensive or I won't be able to afford you. Also may be able to transform other locations into desired location.Things needed for instance underground bomb shelter turned into run down sorta apartment. Abandoned buildings. Offices. Fashion Show. A sewer, where the characters live in and eat off of trash.

Original posting:

Set Decorators/Builders:
Though the majority of the movie will be in real locations. There will be a few sets built, and sets that will be decorated to fit the movie. I am looking for people who have experience building sets (theater experience would be great) on a low budget. Resourcefullness in materials is needed (Meaning you can do a lot with not a lot). Building flats, painting, decorating.

Prosthetics/ Make-Up: Though this is not a gore horror movie. There is quite a few instances of gore. People who have experience in mold making, prostethics, sculpture. etc. would be very helpfull. Also people good at making people looking sickly or malnourished through make-up needed. In addition Emma May, the severe anorexic will need added pieces to protrude her brows and jaw, her ribs, collar bones, hip bones, etc to make herself appear much thinner. Actually a lot of make up needs from simple to complex through out the movie.

Vfx-Compositors- Though this will not be a special effects epic, there will be things needed. Good flashy two animations/composting for some of the fake commercials/promos. Possible fire and underwater animation. Some manipulation of the video -color fluctuations, shrinking an enlarging, simple morph effects, color globules to represent visual aberrations in the characters eye-sight. Some 3-D needed especailly those who are good working with modeling human figures. But mostly more simple 2-D basic 3-D stuff. I may do this myself, but send me a link to your work, and I might hire you for the movie.

Props: I will be doing much of this myself, but may need help in re-creating chemicals, materials, such as drano, soap, dirt, carpet, many other instances through-out the script, to create realistic looking edible (or at least non toxic ) substitutes for the substances they swallow.

Mechanical/Puppetry- Not needed for a lot of the movie. But there is a few scenes with Emma Mays giant snake like tape worm that slithers around. Also a scene where skull bowls start vomiting (have to read script to explain) Could do myself, just seeing if anyone else might be interested.

Lighting Designer: Though I will likely take over this role myself, and a lot of the footage will be shoot in the streets style. There will be a few locations that will be staying in for a long while in the script, and would like good, stylized lighting for maximum creepy effectiveness.

Costume: I already have a few people on board for this, but as this movie ends in a big Valentines Day Fashion Show. I am looking for people who could be commisioned for clothing for that event (and other sequences in the movie as well). Also, previously made pieces could work.

Underwater Camera- Anyone who would like to rent me an underwater camera, or who has experience filming underwater, this is needed for a few sequences.

Boom Mic/ Sound Mixer- I already have someone onboard for this, but never hurts to have a second position, or a backup

Pyro/ Fire Safety/Explosion - This really isn't needed for a lot of the movie. But there is one scenes where a whole room catches on fire (with possible stuntman that catches on fire, I made do this in special effects). There is another scenes where a home-made bomb blows a crack into a wall and makes it crumble. I want these scenes to come off effective and safe.

Security- Not throughout the whole movie, but there will be scenes where I will be filming in potentially dangerous locations, and a climax that will need crowd control

Legal/ Locations- I will probably do this myself, but if anyone has experience in finding or knowing of great locations, or securing permits for locations. I might be interested in working with you.

Production Assistants/Co-Ordinaters (I am sure you know what this means)

Music- I have most of the music worked out. But a band fell out that I really felt I needed for some sequences. If your music is post -rocky, slow core or has that aphex twin meets godspeed you black emperor I may be interested. The kind of bands I'm looking for: Mew, Godspeed you black emperor, Explosions in the sky, Spiritualized, 65 days of static, Sigur Ros. Also in some music Portis-Heady could work.

Thanks
-Jason

Quality preservation when putting videos online

So I produce my videos on Final Cut Pro 3 on my iMac and save it as a Quicktime Movie file, then upload it to Youtube and Myspace, and usually by the time it gets there, the quality has turned to shit (very grainy and pixelated). So my question is what are some ways to work with, save, compress, upload, etc. videos to preserve as much of the quality as possible?

Less than a month ago, I began posting my short political parodies on YouTube.

Since then I've gotten about 500,000, a bunch of YouTube honors, 2 different appearances on CNN, videos played on nationwide radio and TV shows like The Chris Matthews show on MSNBC and I landed a meeting with the head of comedy development at NBC...

Women in crime coverage, my documentary idea

Comments and feedback welcomed for this documentary idea i've had....

http://people.tribe.net/le4life/blog/e52e5069-a312-4783-9577-1689cfc7eddb#comments

America's disproportionate reporting on white, attractive, female victims of crime has been a topic I've wanted to cover in a film for a few years now. Below is the mess of thoughts and observations I hope to someday put together into a cohesive documentary. Brutally honest feedback would be appreciated.

IF I WAS A GIRL
...I never would've even been born, literally. My parents really wanted a boy and tried three times unsuccessfully. After my three sisters, I was on the way, but due to China's anti-overpopulation policies, my parents weren't even supposed to be having any more children. My mom told me that the nurses let her slide because I turned out to be a boy. So Chinese attitudes (not now but back then) around boys versus girls make up the main reason I was conceived and delivered, and thus gender issues are sort of personal to me.

PROSTITUTION, THE WORLD'S OLDEST PROFESSION
In high school I developed an interest in the criminology and psychology of serial killers. A statistic that always stood out for me was the high percentage of victims being prostitutes. One reason street hookers make easy targets is because the illegality and stigma of their work prevents them from approaching police, reporters, and doctors like other victims. Furthermore, do law enforcers and the media treat serial murder cases with less urgency if they involve victims with unconventional lifestyles or jobs? And how is being a woman different in a country such as Amsterdam where sex work is regulated like any other business and where rates of rape, assault, and STD infections on prostitutes are much lower?

DRUGS
Decades ago, opium, cocaine, and marijuana became illegal because, according to the media, Chinese, black, and Mexican men - respectively - were using the substances to seduce or sexually assault white women. Protecting white females as a catalyst for drug prohibition persists to this day, in far more subtle ways. Before Bill Clinton left office, he signed an anti-GHB bill in honor of teenager Hillory Farias who had fell into a fatal coma after having drank something spiked with the depressant chemical. Had Farias not been white, could her overdose have sparked so much attention in the media and led to the criminalization of GHB?

Come to think of it, what is the rate of teenagers of color experiencing such tragedies around drug misuse or abuse? I certainly don't know because reporters don't bring it up. Following the news for my work with DanceSafe.org, every story I saw about anyone who became addicted to or overdosed on ecstasy had the same profile: a middle-class white kid whose life in school and home was perfect before drugs ruined everything. How these reports highlighted the kids goes to show that the definition of an all-American teenager is still a very narrow and false one. According to the media, you should be happy if you're white and on the football team and getting crowned at your prom.

YOUNG, PRETTY, AND ALL-AMERICAN
My sisters were discussing the discovery of Laci Peterson's body one evening and I asked who they were talking about. Sarah asked if I had been asleep the past year to not know about this girl. The reason was that I never watch television or follow the news except for work. I don't see the point in obsessing with such cases - as tragic as they are - because every story is the same. And this brings me to a few more questions:

1) What populations of American women are being ignored by the media?
2) Why does this happen from a news industry perspective?
3) Does more coverage equal better investigations of cases?

Is the focus on the all-American damsel in distress promoting a certain idea of what girls are or should be? Firstly, reporters eulogize each victim as a successful student, loving housewife, or some other socially acceptable role model. Secondly, attractive images of the victim are circulated throughout headlines. What sickened me most about the coverage of Laci Peterson was that the shot of her cute dimple-faced smile was published repeatedly even though her head wasn't even attached to her body anymore. I'm sorry, but this is exploitation, not sympathy. If the media only values sexually appealing, well-behaved females, then is their reporting trend executed out of respect and sorrow, or out of a desire to objectify women and keep them in their place?

COMPARED TO MEN...
The focus on pretty white girls doesn't just exclude the majority of real female victims, but also the majority of male victims. Violent crime reporting in general reflects the urge to promote traditional gender roles - females as complacent, passive victims and males as aggressive perpetrators. The only major coverage on the assault or murder of a man occurs when the assailant is a woman. Because the context of women supposedly being well-behaved has already been established, a case like this will seem especially sensational and unique.

This ideology is shared by our justice system. Women are now being imprisoned at a much faster rate than men, and their crimes - like the ones of their male counterparts - are often drug-related. The sentences they serve are often longer and harsher for the exact same offenses. Why is this? Take any judge or prosecutor or juror who believes women are supposed to be nurturing, gentle mothers and caregivers, and present them with a woman charged of drugs or violence, and how do you think they'll react? In essence, when men commit assault or abuse their children, it is natural and acceptable compared to when women do it, and American courts are acting accordingly.

MacGuillicuddy's Awakening--a short film by The Table of Joviality

Hello all! I'm so very excited because I recently finished editing a movie that was originally destined for Apple's Insomnia Film Festival. In a nutshell, you're required to script, shoot, and edit a 3-minute movie based on a list of 10 elements revealed at the outset of the contest. Oh yeah, you have just 24 hours to do so. It sounds easy--deceivingly easy in fact, but making a quality story under those circumstances is incredibly challenging.

Long story short, we were unable to finish the editing before the deadline, thus we forfeited our entry. Instead I shifted gears and made a vow to complete the movie to the best of my abilities. I made good on that promise, and now I proudly present The Table of Joviality's latest installment, "MacGuillicuddy's Awakening," the director's cut. Enjoy!

SYNOPSIS:
Terrance Patrick MacGuillicuddy travels on a fantastic journey in a wacky dream adventure. Persons in his everyday life take on new forms that exemplify Terry's inner anxieties surrounding his much hated job. Will Terry muster the courage to stick it to the man, or will he continue to be another kink in the corporate machine? Find out in this thrilling, new episode.

I have some good news to share. "The Christmas Card", the Hallmark movie I played the diner waitress 'Molly' in, is now available on DVD through Netflix, Blockbuster, Borders, amazon.com and others. Amazon gave us a 5 star rating and has posted some lovely reviews. Ed Asner was nominated for an Emmy for his outstanding performance in the movie earlier this year. Cast and crew are all thrilled! It's a wonderful holiday gift for the entire family.
;-)
Also, A few weeks ago I did a Slingbox commercial which should air very soon during Monday night football. I play a nervous dental patient in this one. Very funny stuff.

Shooting Using Track

Hi All,

My next project involves using track for the camera. I have never shot using track, just wondering if anyone out there has?

Also wondering how it affects time in the form of setup and moving the track?

Also, what are the pitfalls, if any of using track?

My shot is in a large spacious lobby of a newly constructed hospital. I have walking and talking talent delivering lines. There are trees in the lobby area so I plan on using them as aribtrary foreground as well.

Any advice is welcome.

Thanks

HELP!! I am trying to win a student Film Contest at Apple!!

Hello you guys!

I have been promoting our film madly - I've created
fliers to post, little 'cards' to hand out to people,
and I've sent out batches of emails in groups (I still
have lots more to send out!).

The only way we are going to win is if we ALL promote
like MAD! Below I have copied the email I sent out to
the Whaddya group - use it or change it to suit your
needs. I've attached the flier and 'cards' - you can
change them or use them as is. Please tell EVERYONE
YOU KNOW! Make sure they rate it!!! There are many
problems with the mac site - the main ones that affect
us are
1. You can't search by our movie name - it doesn't
work.
2. Using the email to a friend function on our page
sends a link that doesn't work (or it didn't last time
I checked).
3. The only thing that seems to work is searching by
our team name -
whaddyagonnadoaboutit

Thanks!

Whaddya Gonna Do About It? team entered the
Insomnia Film Festival
Turn 24 hours into a
3-minute masterpiece

The list of elements were given out at 9am EST on
October 13th, we shot at 3 locations, our visual
effects master Andrew Coggeshall was importing and
working while we set up for the next shots. I was
importing footage into Final Cut by 6pm. By 2am I had
picture-lock and I handed off to John Madden for
scoring. Dana Jae proved to be the marathan champion
by mixing and compressing at the wee hours of the
morning to get it uploaded by 9am EST on October 14th.

It was a fantastic learning experience - and we ended
up with a pretty cool little movie. AND WE NEED YOUR
HELP TO WIN!!! There were 3000 entries this year, so
competition will be tough. You can help by watching
and rating movies - the 25 entries with the highest
rating on November 9 at 12:00 a.m. EST will be
screened by industry professionals, including Barry
Sonnenfeld, James Mangold, and Nora Ephron. The
biggest hit with either the public or the pros, each
member of the team will receive a MacBook Pro with
Final Cut Studio 2, Logic Studio, and Shake! THIS
PRIZE WILL HELP US MAKE MORE MOVIES!

So... I encourage you to check it out! Please tell
all of your friends & family, too! You have to create
a Mac ID - if you have ever ordered from Mac or
iTunes, you already have one. You will also need
Quicktime Player - available for free download at Mac.

Whaddya Gonna Do About It? Productions presents...
8 3/4
Please watch and rate it by going to
http://edcommunity. apple.com/ insomnia_ fall07/
in the search field enter our team name:
whaddyagonnadoaboutit
8 and 3/4 will come up, click to watch

I would love to hear your comments! Thanks!

Are you or do you know a documentary film maker looking for a subject?
Well, I have a great one. It is a new project I am working on involving the arts and the elderly.
It is all set to start and the last ingredient is a documentary film maker. This would make a wonderful short documentary subject. It involves little to no research.
If you or anyone you know may be interested, please contact me and I will tell you more about it.
Happy New Day,
JVP

                                                                       SCREENPLAY LOGLINE & SYNOPSIS

LOGLINE: HARLEM RAGES IN DODGE CITY
After terrorizing Harlem in an epidemic of black on black crimes, a fierce gang is killed by local detectives. From the city morgue and in a fate of quantum leap, the dead gang members regress back in time to bloody Dodge City - 1875 and witness the advent of white on white crime.

SYNOPSIS: HARLEM RAGES IN DODGE CITY
In 2007, Harlem New York is plagued by black on black crimes, led by big BO NICKELS and his young, fierce ruffians. Mayor GRANT WOODS orders Detective Sergeant DAN FIELDS to bring big Bo and his gang to justice.

It’s early darn. Sgt. Fields and six detectives pull a surprise raid on big Bo’s Harlem apartment. After breaking down the door and gaining entry into the darken apartment, big Bo and his cohorts open fire on the barging detectives. Sgt. Fields and his team return fire upon the dashing hoods. When the smoke clears, big Bo and all of his crime syndicate, including two women, lie on the floor mortally wounded and later their bodies are removed to the morgue.

In the morgue a miraculous event occurs. In a quantum leap phenomenon, the bodies of big Bo and his gang regress back to 1875 – bloody Dodge City. After eluding wild Indians and Cowboys’ gunfights, Bo and his gang receive a cold reception from Dodge’s citizens. For their own safety, Marshal CLEM TATE relocate the frighten Harlem youths to an abandoned covered wagon on the outskirt of town.

Back to the future, inside New York City Hall, Mayor Woods is presenting meritorious awards to Sgt. Fields and his detectives when a loud explosion is heard as the roof caves in on the mayor and the detectives. Ultimately, Mayor Woods and the detectives are killed in a terrorist blast. Their charred remains are later removed to the morgue.

In the morgue a miraculous event occurs. In a quantum leap phenomenon, the bodies of Mayor Woods and the detectives regress back to 1875 – bloody Dodge City.

After eluding wild Indians and Cowboys’ fights, the mayor and his group walk into a Dodge Saloon where they receive a hearty welcome.
After discovering that big Bo and his pals are also in Dodge City, both parties learn that white on white crimes are equally as violent as that complained of in Harlem New York in the 21st century.

Sometime later a racial incident shakes and divides the citizenry of Dodge City. A white woman falsely accuses two of Bo’s pals are raping her. But even after Marshal Tate and his marshal kill the real rapists, two white gunslingers, still, yet another fierce gunslinger, ONE EYE-BEN, and his thirty hooligans vow to string-up all of the Harlem youths.

Just before dawn a monstrous gunfight is about to erupt. As One-Eye Ben and his goons entered Dodge City, unknown to them, they’re about to encounter one of the fiercest creature the West has ever known, Big NAT KING and his WICHITA BRUTES.

Seeking an interested producer to sponsor and produce a film based upon the above screenplay.

       SCREENPLAY: THE LAST RAPED SLAVE

FEATURE – DRAMA/DIVERSITY - #104 PAGES

LOGLINE: In Galveston, Texas, the last day of slavery in America is beset with startling gloom, as the wickedness of rape and death pays its final visit to a slave master’s plantation.

SYNOPSIS: On a sweltering, tranquil day, June 19, 1865, the last day of slavery, CHET LEGREE, the most despicable slave master in Galveston, Texas, wields a shotgun as he drags his slave BERTHA KEMET into a seamy fishing shed. Subsequently, as Legree completes his rape of Bertha on a small cot, he becomes startled and frightened as Bertha’s slave husband, JOSHUA, bursts frantically through the door. While frozen in a state of terror, Legree spins around, fires a blast from his shotgun, which strike Joshua killing him instantly.

Now encased in an uncontrollable rage, Bertha, a screaming widow, physically attacks LEGREE from behind. Legree whirls around in a crazed frenzy and accidentally shoots Bertha striking her in the chest. As Bertha lay on the cot bleeding profusely and gasping for air; her lazy eyes gazes up helplessly at Legree. Sadly Bertha manages to point her limped finger at Legree and weakly mumbles a financial curse which she deems will eventually topple all wealthy, male descendants of slave masters.

Consequently, after sixty-four-years of financial solvency, alas, many of America’s most affluent sons of slave masters become woefully deranged, as slave Bertha Kemet’s prophesied curse explodes into a debilitating reality: “the 1929 Stock Market becomes the first of many national catastrophes.

Does anyone know of a good book on filmmaking for children? My boyfriend's daughter, an extremely creative 10 year old, is interested in fiImmaking. I found a great site: http://www.kidfilmmakers.com/ But still have yet to find a book. I am getting her a camera and would love to have a reference book for her. You have to encourage a passion that strong in someone that young. I think it's totally awesome she wants to do it! Suggestions?

Writing a Great Script

Has anyone used the book ‘Developing Digital Short Films’ to make a film?

I have been using it and it has a ton of information on how to write a script. There is this free 90 minute video story engine I found that the author is putting up online as a sample from her new video workshop "Writing A Great Script Fast." This thing is a 20 hour DVD class that walks you through ALL the steps you need to think about when writing a script for a film or a story for novel.

Check out the sample YouTube files online it looks pretty cool:

http://www.mindseyemedia.com/Steps/step1intro.html

Just thought I would share the information as a great resource. Walks you through a simple version the 20 hour workshop. It feels like passive learning in a way - or watching a hip TV show while learning about how to write a script. There are all these examples of digital films in this video class that are fun to look at for ideas - and really, really helpful!

There’s also a 50% off sale of the workshop if you order before August 1st - so check it out if you get a chance. Tell your friends or anyone you know who heading in this direction -its harder to write a really great script then one would think. Looks like a great resource for filmmakers these days struggling to pin down their story ideas.

They are also launching a new online movie studio called MyFlik.com with lots of tips, tutorials, funding and articles on no budget filmmaking.

The Smell of Good Audio

I'm considering buying a microphone.

First of all, I can't afford a thousand-dollar mic. The local music shop has a couple of deals and I'd like to know if anyone has any thoughts on them.

This is what I'll use the mics for:

Voiceovers
Usually simple voiceovers. Maybe sometimes loud screaming stuff, maybe whispers. ADR, or just plain voiceovers.

Effects recording
I will probably be recording a lot of the sound effects for movies, including the occasional bit of foley, or crunching sounds, slurping sounds, stuff like that. A lot of what I do has fantasy or horror elements in it, as well as special and weird ambient sounds in rooms.

So...

One deal the local music store offers is the following mic for $100:
http://www.google.com/search?&q=Nady+RSM4

The other deal is a dual-mic pack for $80:
http://www.google.com/search?&q=MXL+990/991

Suggestions? Observations? Recommendations?
Do you have a completed 90 minute film?

My colleague Lance is a rep for a distribution company. If you have a completed 90 minute, non-horror film, he might be able to hook you up with DVD distribution. Just let me know and I'll forward your info.

Peace,
AK

This is for those who like quick turn around competition stuff for filmmakers.

Disclosure: I'm totally non-affiliated with the production or the contest, but am affiliiated with one of the actors which is why I heard about this. I think it's clever on their part to do this.
