Does anyone know of a good book on filmmaking for children? My boyfriend's daughter, an extremely creative 10 year old, is interested in fiImmaking. I found a great site: www.kidfilmmakers.com/ But still have yet to find a book. I am getting her a camera and would love to have a reference book for her. You have to encourage a passion that strong in someone that young. I think it's totally awesome she wants to do it! Suggestions?

Re: Books on Filmmaking for Children?
Thu, August 16, 2007 - 11:29 PMI would look for something that really encourages storytelling skills as this is the key to the most advanced filmmaking - yet is so rarely focused on. Not talking about just writing but basic story telling skills. I don't know a book offhand... but if there is a fun one for that - it would be valuable if she's able to make the connection.
I think half of what I know about shot design i learned by reading the book at age 8: How To Draw the Marvel Way - there are a couple chapters in there about shot design which made a lot of sense... but, again, it might be confusing if you're thinking "this is a drawing book" - Ithink somewhere soeone actually scanned the four pages and put them online, I remember from a google search - it's only like 4 pages of the whole book.
I'm not much help, but I tried. -

Fri, August 17, 2007 - 10:33 AMShe is just getting into sequential art. A friend of mine suggested she start with storyboarding rather than scripting, because scripting can be daunting for someone her age. I'll have to see if we can't find those 4 pages. Thanks for the advice. -

Thu, September 13, 2007 - 11:34 PMI don't think scripting is the thing as much as story. story could definitely be todl in sequential boards.
it's just the mindset.
Also - get her into some acting classes. I always find that most of the professinal writers I know had studied acting first... same with directors. I think it puts you in the righ tmindset of following the story.

Thu, September 13, 2007 - 7:08 PMCheck out "Developing Digital Short Films" or www.MyFlik.com for a free online digital storytelling class. As mentioned, visual storytelling skills are really important for young filmmakers to develop. This book and video "Writing A Great Script Fast" will jumpstart a young artist into a very high level of ability fast! Think of doing fun film projects together that you can help on :)
