Hello I joined this tribe in hopes of getting some advice on purchasing a camcorder...I have had very ilttle experience with professional equiqment, but am hoping to change this....Semi-professional is ok considering that I'm just starting to experiment with it all...I want to spend $1500-$2500...I had a film student recommend the Sony DCR vx2100, but after reading a few reviews, and checking out what it's capable of, I'm not sure if it's the one....Any advice?

Thu, January 10, 2008 - 8:30 AMI think in that range, my eyes would land on the HV20 or (new) HV30 which I think are under 1000. With any other money I would get an external boom mic (there are affordable options out there). I think because of the announcement of th HV30 (which does 30p), the HV20 probably will have or just had a big price drop too.
There are also a ton of new cameras coming onto the market - CES just happened.
The HV20 has shot some very nice stuff... If you wanted to spend more, you could get a 35mm adapter for it and then it would have film like depth of field. This will make a bigger difference than most anything else.
Here's a sample of a tricked out hv20 prolost.blogspot.com/2007/08...toy.html
I think ALL indie filmmakers should keep an eye on what RED will announce at NAB - the pocket camera. But that MIGHT be out of your price range, hard to know how consumer they are going for it.
Most of these range of cameras though know will not hand low light situations that great. Even the HVX200 doesn't. -

Re: Amatuer amatuer
Thu, January 10, 2008 - 8:32 AMby the way - note that using a 35mm adapter involves a lot more work and I don't think it's the kind of thing one should just jump into unaware of the extra trouble it can add. That said - Brevis and Letus get a lot of attention in that market and you can see samples on their sites if you hunt them down. -

Wed, January 23, 2008 - 2:53 PMMore and more pro-sumer cams are being released that record like the P2. I would hold out as long as you can as the transition is made from tape to video card. The fewer moving parts the better. Even my Firestore Pro recording devices seem out dated now.
I have a Red on order and currently shoot on the P2's but Red is a gamble right now. Ill be sure to give my comments after we field test it. -
